Ellen Mimi Schlecht (aka “Mimi”) is a multi-hyphenate (theatre) artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She is dedicated to playful & imaginative storytelling and has a passion for accessible, equitable arts education. She has been involved in theatre from a young age, and owes all of her passion & success to her many mentors throughout the years.

Her biggest goal is to become a mentor for other young theatre-artists, empowering them to use the tools of theatre in other aspects of their lives, whether that's leadership, collaboration, or character-building.

Mimi recently graduated from NYU Tisch with a BFA in Drama and BA in Politics.

She is currently pursuing her Masters in Arts Politics at the NYU Dept. of Arts & Public Policy.

During undergrad, she studied with Playwrights Horizons Theater School and the Atlantic Acting School (where she fell in love with Suzuki movement training). She loves to direct, write, act, and also considers herself a producer!

Throughout her life, she has been drawn to theatre as a form of community building. Her artistry is rooted in a deep commitment to collaboration, experimentation, and love. Recently, I assistant directed Tisch Drama Stage’s production of “RENT” alongside Orion Johnstone, which highlighted the protest themes within the musical and further explored the Tompkins Square Riots. She also performed in the Verbatim Performance Lab’s “that’s not supposed to be happening”, exploring the struggles and evils of NYC housing. Currently, my fascination lies in the exploration of whether or not art can ever truly be non-political and how art and arts administration can play a role in policy-making and community.
